PIR Submissions? – Don’t forget – PIR’s are not needed on complaints where you are applying a service “fix” EG:
something from a Techline, Dealer Letter, etc – to correct a complaint, OR where there is a breakpoint set for
production correction.
When fitting shock absorbers, etc, where rear suspension arms can move to full limit of their travel – make sure you
support the suspension arm so that the drive shaft is not loaded to full “extension”. It is possible that the inner axle shaft
may be pulled out of the final drive unit, with extreme loading. Please take care!

PIR Submissions? – Don’t forget – PIR’s are not needed on complaints where you are applying a service “fix”
EG: something from a Techline, Dealer Letter, etc, to correct a complaint, OR where there is a breakpoint set for a
production correction.
VU Early Warning Program – We DO need all your PIR’s on any VU customer complaints, or conditions you
define in service, are in need of correction! Refer to the All Dealer Letter DL/07/01 for details!
VT Series I, V6 Cold Hesitation/Stall? – Remember the Techline of Sept., 1999 (Issue 7, Page10) that advised the
use of VT Series II memcals to correct hesitations/stalls? - HSV “XU6” (S/C V6) was not mentioned in that Techline –
but if you do get the same complaint on an HSV “XU6” – then you can fit the Series II XU6 memcal (refer to
PartFinder).
VT Series 2/WH/VX/VU - GEN3 - PCM Incompatibility
Technicians should be aware that whilst PCMs for all Gen3 engines physically look the same between model variants,
both the hardware and software are in fact different. Please ensure that only the correct software is flash programmed
to the correct vehicle. Also ensure that the correct PCM is fitted and do not mis-match these PCM’s under any
circumstances. Refer to PartFinder for correct part numbers when necessary.

Some Monthly Hints!
SB Front Suspension/Stabiliser “Squeak” Noises
Please don’t forget that there is the Techline entitled
“Squeak From Front Suspension” in the August, 2000
issue, page 7 – this advises to use the new front
stabiliser bar “inner” bushes, designed especially for
this complaint. Don’t forget this when you have a
com plaint about squeak s from front suspens ion – don’t
keep lubricating the stabiliser bar and bushes – fit the
new “inner” bushes to permanently fix the noise!
VIN Stamping Added to VX & WH Underbody – you
may have noticed there are three breakpoints for
Sedan, Wagon and Statesman in the Breakpoint
Summ ary pages? T he inform ation about this stamping,
a diagram and the location, are in VX, Service
Information, Section OA in your SIP CD.
Gen 3 Con-Rod Bolts Don’t Fit? – Well that’s how the
phone call usually starts when someone is trying to fit
new con-rod bolts to an early build Gen 3 engine.
Actually, any of the released bolts W ILL fit – but if you
haven’t removed the original bolt ‘spacers’ from the
con-rod cap, the new bolts will not fit! Early build
engines had a spacer ferrule on the bolts, HSPO stock
bolts were the same. When the bolts are torqued, the
ferrule compresses and “locks” into the con-rod cap. It
does not come out when you remove the bolt, and is
hard to see – SO – when you are replacing the c on-rod
bolts on any Gen3 (especially an early build vehicle)
m ake sur e you ver y c arefully remove the spac er ferrule
from the cap before attempting to fit the new bolts.
WH Sill Drain Plugs “not draining” – m ay be caused
by the outer ‘skirts’ pressing on the drain plugs. This
can be corrected by loosening the skirts, or cutting a
small amount of the skirt material away to provide
clearance, and replacing the plugs – that take a “set”
and will not drain properly even with the extra
clearance.
TECH 2 ON 2001 BUILT FRONTERA – When
connecting TECH 2 on late model Frontera please
remember that the engine data will not be accessible if
a 2001 MY is selected; you must enter through the
2000 MY section to review data. The 2001 model data
only becomes effective around the middle of this year
with the introduction of 2001 MY specifications.
Vehicles that are built to 2000 MY specifications carry
the ‘Y’ year designator in the VIN number
e.g. 4S2UES25FY4100000.
Jackaroo Odometer Replacement – Once an
odometer has been diagnosed as faulty on a Monterey
or Jackaroo, it should be remembered that unlike TS,
JS and VX vehicles the odometer can not be re-
programmed through Tech 2. The unit should be sent
to a qualified instrument repairer (EG: a VDO Agent)
who can make the required adjustment before fitting
the new unit.
ONLY use the latest SIP or TIS 2000 CD-ROM’s!
That will ensure that you have the very latest

GEN3 Flash Programming, VT/VX/WH – Make sure whenever you are flash programming a Gen3
engined vehicle, that you definitely put an “F” in the tenth character, the engine definer, of the ISOVIN,
otherwise the programming will fail. For your reference, an “A” = V6; an “F” = Gen3 V8; an “R” = S/ C V6 –
this inf o. Is also shown in the General Info. Section of SIP & Service Manuals for the ser ial numbers.
TS non-ABS (M/Year 2001) Pre-Delivery “Concern”If you notice there is a harness connection “not
connected” at the RH front wheel of these vehicles – don’t be too concerned! These – non-ABS – vehicles
use an ABS sensor signal f rom the LH front wheel hub to provide the vehicle speed signal. To simplify this
use of the ABS type hub in production, two front hubs of the ABS t ype are fitt ed. (T his is similar to previous
J cars – where the LH rear ABS sensor was used f or speed signals on non-ABS vehicles!).
TS, JS (M/Year 2001) – ‘ Phone Connectors No Longer Fit ted – ‘Phone connectors are no long er f itt ed to
these vehicles, from Model Year 2001. While PartFinder shows there is a connector package (this is
incorrect and will be revised in a fut ure PartFinder issue).

VX Instrument Illumination “flicker” w hen adjusting illumination – This can be caused by an incorrect
Headlamp switch being f it t ed in production – make sure you have the correct t ype of switch for the vehicle –
IE either t he ‘2 position f ixed dim’ or ‘variable dim ’ or ‘auto headlam p on’ type? Ref er t o Part Finder f or exact
applications/part num bers.
Gen3 V8 – Squeal Noise from the Starter on Disengagement – bef ore you start pulling the trans. out to
find out what may be the cause – Remove the starter bolts one at a time! TAS has had a couple of calls
where this noise was caused by “bent” starter motor mounting bolts. Replacing the bent bolt corrected the
noise! This m ay save you wasting a lot of diagnosis time. Please PIR any cases of this that you see!
Electronic Cl imat e Control (ECC), 6 Vacuum Solenoi d Pack Informat ion – t he next issue of the SI P CD
will contain service and diagnosis information on the 6 vacuum solenoid pack – used f r om Oct., ’99 build VT

Servicing Light Commercial Vehicle 4WD Front Wheel Bearings and Hubs – W hen servicing the front
hub assemblies, particularly on high mileag e vehicles, be sure to inspect the condit ion and t he cor r ect fitting
of t he snap ring that ret ains the drive shaft in t he hub assembly. Should the snap ring come adrif t, damage
to the hub and drive shaft assemblies will occur.
Note: Do not over-s t r et ch the snap ring when removing or refitting during service.
Replacement Backup Inject or O-Rings (Jackaroo Diesel ) – If during normal ser vice the ‘back up O-ring

VX, VU Low Fuel Level Warning Instrument Revisions (Breakpoint Summary Info. this issue!) From
L720523 (24/04/01) to L728029 (10/05/01), all 20 different instrument clusters used in VX & VU have been
recalibrated to reduce the two low fuel warning points from 8 litres to 6 litres (approx.) and 2 litres to 1 litre
(approx.) respectively. Refer to Owners handbook page 1-6 for low fuel level warning display actions at these
fuel quantities.
TS Misfire Codes? - before you go replacing parts for any misfire codes P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304
(Cyls 1, 2, 3, 4 “misfire detected”) first check that the cause is not water in the fuel! TAS have had quite a
few cases of water in fuel causing these codes to set recently. This was only found after some exhaustive
diagnosis work! We suggest to first check to see if water is present in the fuel by draining some fuel from the
inlet side of the filter. This may save you some time and annoyance?

Drive Belt Squeal – W e have had some comments from technicians that they have had numerous cases
of engine drive belt squeal on all makes of vehicles – after de-greasing or cleaning engine bays with
detergent cleaners. They only discovered this when they changed to a less aggressive (non-caustic?_
detergent for this purpose. If you are having “belt squeal’ f rom vehicles shortly after servicing - we sugg est
you check what detergents your dealership uses for engine bay cleaning/de-greasing, and possibly try a
less aggressive detergent or an alternative detergent for a while – to see if this stops the condition.
