SECTION H - WHEELS, TYRES AND
STEERING WHEEL
CAUTION:
HSV vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). An SRS consists of seat belt pre-
tensioners (fitted to all front seats), and a driver’s-side air bag or a driver’s-side air bag AND a passenger’s-
side air bag and left and right hand side airbags. Refer to CAUTIONS, Section 12M, in Volume 12 of the
Holden series VX Service Manual before performing any service operation on or around SRS components,
the steering mechanism or wiring. Failure to follow the CAUTIONS could result in personal injury or
unnecessary SRS system repairs.
PURPOSE
The purpos e of this sec tion is to pr ov ide inf orm ation o n the whee ls, t yres and ste ering whee ls f itted to the H SV VU
model. The information is designed to supplement that given in the Holden VU Series Service Information and
details are given where differences occur between the HSV models and standard Holden models. A series of
instruction drawings describe the design changes and indicate specific part numbers, fitting instructions and
relevant notes for vehicle servicing.
NOTE:
If specific technical data on a HSV model is not contained in this supplement, obtain data for that model from the
relevant Holden VU Series Service Information. References are made throughout this section to Holden Service
Information, to assist in providing information for specific service operations.
CAUTION:
W hen hoisting (or jac king) HSV models , ensure that the lifting h ead of the hoist lifts on the chass is before the arm
of the hoist contacts the side-skirt
1. WHEELS AND TYRES
1.1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
HSV VU models are fitted with alloy wheels developed specifically for each HSV application.
NOTE:
Specific wheel nuts are used to attach ‘T’ Design wheels to the vehicle. These nuts are fitted with a plastic dress
cap, which must be removed prior to undoing the wheel nuts.
CAUTION:
HSV VU whee ls do not ha ve a s teel i nsert an d ther efore r equire wheel nuts with a f langed seat as per th e VT , VT 2
and VX wheel nuts . Do not use VS wheels nuts on HSV VU wheels.
SERVICE OPERATIONS
Allo y wheels f itted to all HS V vehic les ar e to be servic ed in acc orda nce with t he proc edures detailed i n the re levant
Holden Service Information refer to Section 10 – Wheels And Tyres, of the VT Series II Service Information. In
addition, p ar tic ular c are s houl d be taken wit h the sur f ac e f inis h of alloy wheels. The m anuf ac turer rec ommends that
alloy surfaces be treated the same as high-gloss painted services to prevent corrosion and general deterioration.
1.2. WHEEL AND TYRE BALANCING
In order to balance the HSV Design wheels and tyre assemblies, refer to the relevant Holden Series Service
Information, refer to Section 10 – Wheels And Tyres, of the VT Series II Service Information.
NOTE:
HSV wheels are bal anced with c once aled weights. T he later al dis tance be tween t hese weights is consid erab ly less
than the ac tual width of the wheel. T o achieve whe el balance wit hin specif ication with conc ealed balance weights,
set the balancing machine for a wheel width of 5.5". Figure H-1 also expla ins this r equirement.
1.3 HSV WHEEL AND TYRE COMBINATIONS
The following HSV Wheels and tyre combination are fitted to VU.
Model Wheel Tyre
Maloo and Maloo R8 5-spoke, 18” x 8” (48P) 235/40 ZR18
1.4 TYRE PLACARD AND PRESSURES
The HSV Tyre Placard is positioned on the opening of the right hand door. The Tyre Placard details important
inform ation on the t yre pre ssures recomm ended for the HS V VU Maloo. C old Pr essur es for the 235/ 40 ZR18 tyres
are 250k Pa. If car rying load , or tr ave ll ing at hi gh s pe ed , the t yre pr es sur es nee d to be incr eas e d, as detailed o n the
placard. This is ver y important for tyre wear a nd also t o ensure that the t yres have suf ficient lo ad carr ying capac ity
for the load in the HSV Maloo.
1.5 LOADING THE HSV MALOO
Also on the right hand door opening are the HSV Maloo payload details. The Maloo is restricted to a maximum
payload of 490kg, with the driver and passenger in the car, this leaves approximately 350kg load capacity for the
rear tra y. The load is r est ricted by the c ar r ying c a pac ity of the 2 35/ 40 Z R 18 t yres. As noted abo ve, it is impor tant t o
increase tyre pressures when vehicle load is increased, refer to the tyre placard.
1.6 HSV MALOO TEMPORARY SPARE TYRE
All HSV Ma loo’s are f itted with a tem porar y spare wh eel/t yre. This tem porary use spar e is for em ergenc y use onl y,
do not exceed 80km/h when it is fitted. Refer to the owner’s manual for further details.
2. STEERING WHEEL
CAUTION:
HSV VU vehicles are equipped with AIR BAGS. An AIR BAG is a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).
Refer to CAUTIONS, Section 12M, of the Holden VU Series Service Information before performing any
service operation on or around SRS components, the steering mechanism or wiring. Failure to follow the
CAUTIONS could result in air bag deployment, resulting in possible personal injury or unnecessary SRS
system repairs .
The steering wheel assembly fitted to all HSV VU models incorporates a HSV-design central horn pad complete
with HSV logo (see Figure H-2). The central horn pad also incorporates the driver’s-side air bag. All other
components , fixt ures and f asteners are identic al to standar d Hold en par ts an d th erefor e, an y service oper ations on
the assembly should be carried out in accordance with the relevant Holden Service Information, refer to
Section 9A – Steering of the VT Series I Service Information.
