SECTION F - TRANSMISSION
CAUTION:
HSV vehicles are equipped w ith a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). An SRS consists of seat belt pre-
tensioners ( fit ted to all fron t seat s) , and a d riv er’s-sid e air bag or a driv er’s- side air b ag AND a passenger’s-
side air bag. Refer to CAUTIONS, Section 12M, of the Holden VX Series Service Information before
performing any service operation on or around S RS components, the steering mechanism or wiring. Failure
to follow the CAUTIONS could result in personal injury or unnecessary SRS system repairs.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide inf ormation on the transm ission assem blies fitted to the HSV VX m odels.
This inform ation is des igned to supplem ent the infor mation contained in the Holden VX s eries Service Infor mation,
and details are given where differences occur between the HSV models and standard Holden models. A series of
instruction drawings describe the design changes and indicate specific part numbers, fitting instructions and
relevant notes for vehicle servicing.
NOTE:
If specific technical data on a HSV model is not contained in this supplement, obtain data for that model from the
relevant Holden VX Series Service Information. References are made throughout this section to Holden Service
Information, to assist in providing information for specific service operations.
CAUTION:
W hen hois ting (or j acking) HSV models, ens ure that the lifting head of the hoist lif ts on the chassis before the arm
of the hoist contacts the side-skirt
1. GROUP 7 - TRANSMISSION - GENERAL INFORMATION
A range of m anual and automatic transmis sions are fitted to the HSV VX and W H models . Th is range includes the
standard Holden options of four-speed automatic and six speed manual.
HSV models fitted with standard Holden transmissions are to be serviced in accordance with the relevant Holden
Service Information, clutch mechanisms associated with these vehicles are also addressed in the Holden
publications.
The following table provides a sum mary of Standard (S) and Optional (O) transmissions fitted to HSV VX and W H
models. TABLE F-1

2. GROUP 7A - CLUTCH
2.1 GMH CLUTCH
HSV vehicles fitted with the standard Holden manual transmission (see Table F-1), are also fitted with a standard
Holden clutch. These clutch assemblies are to be serviced in accordance with the procedures contained in the
relevant Holden Service Information, refer to Section 7A2 - CLUTCH – GEN III V8 ENGINE.
3. GROUP 7B – MANUAL
3.1 SERVICE OPERATIONS
All HSV VX manual vehicles come fitted with the standard Holden T56 manual transmission.
Service operations for this transmission are detailed in the Holden VX Series Service Supplement, refer to
Section 7B3 - MANUAL TRANSMISSION – Gen III V8 Engine.
4. GROUP 7C AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
4.1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The automatic transmissions fitted to HSV VX and W H models are the standard Holden transmissions, which are
variants of the Hydra-matic 4L60E transmissions. Depending on application, these transmissions may include
calibration or hardware changes over the standard transmission.
Thes e transmiss ions are all developments of the standard Holden Hydra-matic 4L60-E transm ission. As in all HSV
developments, reliability and efficiency have been improved as a result of engineering research, development and
extensive testing. In most cases, development of the standard transmissions has been necessitated by - and
carried out in parallel with - the development of HSV’s enhanced range of engines. The result is that all HSV VX and
WH models have an engine-transmission combination designed to satisfy (and to exceed) the operating
specif ication of the vehic le. The types of autom atic transm issions us ed in the HSV VX and series of vehicles listed
in Table F-1, are explained in succeeding paragraphs. Shift Patterns for each HSV transmission have been
included in this section (see Figure F-6 and Figure F-7) to assist with the diagnosis and servicing of these
transmissions.
4.2. HSV VX CLUBSPORT 255, SENATOR 255 SEDAN AND ESTATE,
AND GRANGE 255 SEDAN.
The Automatic Transmission available for Clubsport, Senator and Grange 255 Models, is the model OHPD. The
OHPD transmission is the standard Holden VX V8 transmission. Service operations are the same as those
described in the Holden VX Series Service Information, refer to Section 7C1 - HYDRA-MATIC 4L60-E
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - GENERAL INFORMATION.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM): HSV trans miss ions f itted to 255 k W vehic les inco rpor ate a spec if ic PCM. This
HSV PCM is calibrated to recognise the higher torque of the engine, and to provide a specific shift pattern for
optimum c ontrol of the vehicle. Sectio n E of this Supplem ent provides the identif ication and servic e number s of the
PCM required for these transmissions.
For VX HSV have tak en the oppor tunity to include two very differ ent transm ission m odes using the Power/Economy
switch. T he economy mode shif t pattern has been optimis ed for sm ooth driving while the Power mode gives firm er
shifts and takes advantage of the LS1 engines characteristics.
4.3 HSV XU6, SENATOR AND GRANGE 180 S/C
The HSV VX Supercharged V6 range are available with automatic transmissions only.
The automatic transmissions fitted to HSV VX Supercharged V6 models is the standard Holden VX Hydra-matic
model OHND. Service operations for this transmission are detailed in the appropriate Holden Service Information,
refer to Section 7C1 - HYDRA-MATIC 4L60-E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - GENERAL INFORMATION.
