STEERING WHEEL

CAUTION:

HSV vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). An SRS consists of seat belt

pre-tensioners (fitted to all front seats), and a driver’s-side air bag or a driver’s-side air bag AND a

passenger’s-side air bag and left and right hand side airbags. Refer to CAUTIONS, Section 12M, of the

VT Series I Service Information or Section 12M, of the VT Series II Service Information before performing

any service operation on or around SRS components, the steering mechanism or wiring. Failure to

follow the CAUTIONS could result in personal injury or unnecessary SRS system repairs.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this section is to provide information on the wheels, tyres and steering wheels fitted to the HSV VT2

and HSV VS utilit y model. The information is designed to supplem ent that given in the Holden VT2 and VS series

Service Manuals and details are given where differences occur between the HSV models and standard Holden

models. A series of instruction drawings describe the design changes and indicate specific part numbers, fitting

instructions and relevant notes for vehicle servicing.

NOTE: If specific technical data on a HSV model is not contained in this supplement, obtain data for that model

from the relevant Holden VT2 or VS series Service Manual Supplement. References are made throughout this

section to Holden Service Manuals, to assist in providing information for specific service operations.

CAUTION: When hoisting (or jacking) HSV models, ensure that the lifting head of the hoist lifts on the chassis

before the arm of the hoist contacts the side-skirt

1. WHEELS AND TYRES

1.1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION

HSV VT2 and VS models are fitted with alloy wheels developed specifically for each HSV application. Several

types and si zes of whee l are m anufac tured to su it t he various a pplicat ions and eac h wheel is m anuf actured f rom a

single-piece alloy casting.. Similarly, wheels with varying OFFSETS are employed to match the suspension

requirements of each HSV model.

NOTE: Specific whe el nuts are used to attach ‘T’ Design wheels to the vehic le. These nu ts are fitted with a plastic

dress cap which must be removed prior to undoing the wheel nuts.

CAUTION: HSV VT & VT2 alloy wheels do not have a stee l insert and therefore require wheel nuts with a flanged

seat like the VT & VT2 wheel nuts, 10B-970304. Do not use VS wheels nuts on HSV VT wheels.

SERVICE OPERATIONS

Alloy wheels fitted to all HSV vehicles are to be serviced in accordance with the procedures detailed in

Section 10 – Wheels and Tyres of the VT Series II Service Information or the relevant section of the VS Series

Service Information. In addition, particular care should be taken with the surface finish of alloy wheels. The

manufacturer recommends that alloy surfaces be treated the same as high-gloss painted surfaces to prevent

corrosion and general deterioration.

1.2. WHEEL AND TYRE BALANCING

In order to balance the HSV ‘S’ and ‘T’ Design wheels and tyre assemblies, refer to Section 10 – Wheels and

Tyres of the VT Series II Service Information or the relevant section of the VS Series Service Information..

NOTE: HSV wheels are balanced with concealed weights. The lateral distance between these weights is

considera bly less than the actual wid th of the wheel . To achieve wheel balance withi n specificat ion with conc ealed

balance weights, set the balancing machine for a wheel width of 5.5". Figure H-1 also explains this requirement.

1.3 HSV WHEEL AND TYRE COMBINATIONS

The following HSV Wheels and tyre combination are fitted to HSV VT2 and HSV VS ute.

XU6 and ClubSport: 5-spoke, 17” x 8” (48P) using 235/45 ZR17 tyres

Senator Sedans And Estates: Standard: 10-spoke 17” x 8” (48P) using 235/45 ZR17 tyres

Optional: 10-spoke 18” x 8” (48P) using 235/40 tyres

Maloo: 5-spoke 17” x 7” (37P) using 225/45 ZR17 tyres

Grange: 10-spoke 18” x 8” (48P) using 235/40 ZR18 tyres

ClubSport R8: 5-spoke, 18” x 8” (48P) using 235/40 ZR18 tyres

SV99: 9-spoke, 18” x 8” (48P) using 235/40 ZR18 tyres

GTS: 9-spoke, 18” x 8” (48P) using 235/40ZR18 tyres (‘Shadow Chrome’)

2. GROUP 9 - STEERING WHEEL

CAUTION:

HSV VT2 and VS vehicles are equipped with AIR BAGS. An AIR BAG is a Supplemental Restraint

System (SRS). Refer to CAUTIONS, Section 12M, of the Holden VS Series Service Information

Supplement or Section 12M, of the VT Series II Service Information before performing any service

operation on or around SRS components, the steering mechanism or wiring. Failure to follow the

CAUTIONS could result in air bag deployment, resulting in possible personal injury or unnecessary SRS

system repairs .

The steering wheel assembly fitted to all HSV VT2 and VS models incorporates a HSV-design central horn pad

complete wit h HSV logo (see F igure H- 2) . T he c entral horn p ad a lso inc or p orates th e driver’s -s ide air b ag. All other

components , fixt ures a nd fas teners are iden tica l to st andard Ho lden parts and th erefor e, an y service oper ati ons on

the assembly should be carried out in accordance with detailed in Section 9A – Steering of the VT Series II
