ATTENTION
HSV vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). An SRS consists of seat belt pre-
tensioners (fitted to all front seats), a driver’s-side air bag, and a passenger’s-side air bag. Refer to
CAUTIONS, Section 12M, of the Holden Adventra AWD series Service Manual before performing any service
operation on or around SRS components, the steering mechanism or w iring. Failure to follow the CAUTIONS
could result in personal injury or unnecessary SRS system repairs.

1 Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information on the transmission assemblies fitted to the HSV Avalanche AWD
models. This information is designed to supplement the information contained in the Holden Adventra AWD series
Service Manuals, and details are given where differences occur between the HSV models and standard Holden models.
A series of instruction drawings describe the design changes and indicate specific part numbers, fitting instructions and
relevant notes for vehicle servicing.
NOTE:
If specific technical data on a HSV model is not
contained in this supplement, obtain data for that
model from the relevant Holden Adventra AWD
series Service Manual Supplement. References
are made throughout this section to Holden
Service Manuals, to assist in providing
information for specific service operations.
When hoisting (or jacking) HSV models,
ensure that the liftin g head of the hoist lifts on
the chassis before the arm of the hoist
contacts the side-skirt

3 Automatic Transmission
3.1 General Description
The automatic transmissions fitted to HSV Avalanche AWD models are the heavy duty Hydramatic 4L65E, which are
variants of the Hydra-matic 4L60E transmissions. These transmissions include calibration and hardware changes over
the standard 4L60E transmission.
These transmissions are all developments of the standard Holden Hydra-matic 4L60-E transmission. As in all HSV
developments, reliability and efficiency have been improved as a result of engineering research, development and
extensive testing. In most cases, development of the standard transmissions has been necessitated by - and carried out
in parallel with - the development of HSV’s enhanced range of engines. The result is that all HSV Avalanche AWD
models have an engine-transmission combination designed to satisfy (and to exceed) the operating specification of the
vehicle.

3.2 HSV Avalanche AWD 270 Wagon
The Automatic Transmission available in Avalanche AWD, is the model THM. Service operations are the same as those
described in the Holden Adventra AWD series Service Information, refer to Section 7C1 – HYDRA-MATIC 4L65-E
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION – GENERAL INFORMATION.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) HSV transmissions fitted to 270 kW vehicles incorporate a specific PCM. This HSV
PCM is calibrated to recognise the higher torque of the engine, and to provide a specific shift pattern for optimum control
of the vehicle. Section E of this Supplement provides the identification and service numbers of the PCM required for
these transmissions.
For Avalanche AWD HSV have taken the opportunity to include two very different transmission modes using the
Power/Economy switch. The economy mode shift pattern has been optimised for smooth driving while the Power mode
gives firmer shifts and takes advantage of the LS1 engines characteristics.

3.3 HSV Avalanche AWD Wagon Front Final
Drive
The Front Final Drive available in Avalanche AWD, is the same as fitted to Holden Adventra AWD models. Service
operations are the same as those described in the Holden Adventra AWD series Service Information, refer to
Section 4B2 – FRONT FINAL DRIVE,BEARING HOUSING & DRIVESHAFTS – GENERAL INFORMATION
