ATTENTION
HSV vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). An SRS consists of seat belt pre-
tensioners (fitted to all front seats), a driver’s-side air bag, a passenger’s-side air b ag and left and right hand
side air bags. Refer to CAUTIONS, Section 12M Occupant Protection System in the MY 2005 VZ Series
Service Information before performing any service operation on or around SRS components, the steering
mechanism or wiring. Failure to follow the CAUTIONS could result in personal injury or unnecessary SRS
system repairs.

1 Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information on the transmission assemblies fitted to the HSV VZ models. This
information is designed to supplement the information contained in the Holden VZ series Service Manuals, and details
are given where differences occur between the HSV models and standard Holden models. A series of instruction
drawings describe the design changes and indicate specific part numbers, fitting instructions and relevant notes for
vehicle servicing.
NOTE
If specific technical data on a HSV model is not
contained in this supplement, obtain data for that
model from the relevant Holden VZ series Service
Manual Supplement. References are made
throughout this section to Holden Service
Manuals, to assist in providing information for
specific service operations.
When hoisting (or jacking) HSV models,
ensure that the liftin g head of the hoist lifts on
the chassis before the arm of the hoist
contacts the side-skirt

2 General Information
A range of manual and automatic transmissions are fitted to the HSV VZ models. This range includes the standard
Holden options of four-speed automatic and six speed manual.
HSV models fitted with standard Holden transmissions are to be serviced in accordance with the relevant Holden Service
Manual: clutch mechanisms associated with these vehicles are also addressed in the Holden publications.
The following table provides a summary of Standard (S) and Optional (O) transmissions fitted to HSV VZ models.

3 Clutch
3.1 GMH Clutch
HSV VZ vehicles use the GEN IV LS2 V8 engine, coupled to an M12 T56 manual trans and fitted with a unique flywheel,
clutch and pressure plate asm. (Holden prt.no. 12570806). These clutch assemblies are to be serviced in accordance
with the procedures contained in the relevant Holden Service Information,
refer to Section 7A3 – Clutch – Gen III V8 Engine.

4.1 Service Operations
All HSV VZ manual vehicles come fitted with the standard Holden M12 6speed manual transmission. Service operations
for this transmission are detailed in the Holden VZ series Service Supplement,
refer to Section 7B2 – Manual Transmission – Gen III V8 Engine.

5 Automatic Transmission
5.1 General Description
The automatic transmissions fitted to HSV VZ models are the heavy duty Hydramatic 4L65E, which are variants of the
Hydra-matic 4L60E transmissions. These transmissions include calibration and hardware changes over the standard
4L60E transmission.
As in all HSV developments, reliability and efficiency have been improved as a result of engineering research,
development and extensive testing. In most cases, development of the standard transmissions has been necessitated by
- and carried out in parallel with - the development of HSV’s enhanced range of engines. The result is that all HSV VZ
models have an engine-transmission combination designed to satisfy (and to exceed) the operating specification of the
vehicle. The types of automatic transmissions used in the HSV VZ and series of vehicles listed in Table F-1, are
explained in succeeding paragraphs. Shift Patterns for each HSV transmission have been included in this section (see
Figures F-6 to F-7) to assist with the diagnosis and servicing of these transmissions.

5.2 HSV Clubsport 297, Maloo 297 and
Senator 297 Sedan
The Automatic Transmission available for Clubsport, Senator and Maloo 297 Models, is the model HMD M32.
Service operations are the same as those described in the Holden VZ series Service Information, refer to
Section 7C1 – Hydra-Matic 4L60-E Automatic Transmission – General Information.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM)
HSV transmissions fitted to 297 kW vehicles incorporate a specific PCM. This HSV PCM is calibrated to recognise the
higher torque of the engine, and to provide a specific shift pattern for optimum control of the vehicle. Section E of this
Supplement provides the identification and service numbers of the PCM required for these transmissions.
