ATTENTION
HSV vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). An SRS consists of seat belt pre-
tensioners (fitted to all front seats), and a driver’s-side air bag or a driver’s-side air bag AND a passenger’s-
side air bag. Refer to CAUTIONS, Section 12M in the Holden VY Series Service Information before performing
any service operation on or around SRS components, the steering mechanism or wiring. Failure to follow the
CAUTIONS could result in personal injury or unnecessary SRS system repairs.

1 Purpose
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide information on the transmission assemblies fitted to the HSV VY models. This
information is designed to supplement the information contained in the Holden MY 2003 VY and V2 Series Service
Information, and details are given where differences occur between the HSV models and standard Holden models. A
series of instruction drawings describe the design changes and indicate specific part numbers, fitting instructions and
relevant notes for vehicle servicing.
NOTE
If specific technical data on a HSV model is not
contained in this supplement, obtain data for that
model from the relevant Holden VY Series
Service Information. References are made
throughout this section to Holden Service
Manuals, to assist in providing information for
specific serv ice operati ons .
When hoisting (or jacking) HSV models,
ensure that the lifting head of the hoist lifts on
the chassis before the arm of the hoist
contacts the side-skirt

2 General Information
A range of manual and automatic transmissions are fitted to the HSV VY models. This range includes the standard
Holden options of four-speed automatic and six speed manual.
HSV models fitted with standard Holden transmissions are to be serviced in accordance with the relevant Holden Service
Information, clutch mechanisms associated with these vehicles are also addressed in the Holden publications.
New for the VY Series is the 300kW Auto which uses the heavy duty HZD transmission.
The following table provides a summary of Standard (S) and Optional (O) transmissions fitted to HSV VY models.

3 Clutch
3.1 GMH Clutch
HSV vehicles fitted with the standard Holden manual transmission (see Table F-1), are also fitted with a standard Holden
clutch. These clutch assemblies are to be serviced in accordance with the procedures contained in the relevant Holden
Service Information, refer to Section 7A2 – Clutch – GEN III V8 Engine.

4.1 Service Operations
All HSV VY manual vehicles come fitted with the standard Holden T56 manual transmission.
Service operations for this transmission are detailed in the Holden VY series Service Supplement, refer to Section 7B2
Manual Transmission – GEN III V8 Engine.

5 Automatic Transmission
5.1 General Description
The automatic transmissions fitted to HSV VY models are the standard Holden transmissions, which are variants of the
Hydra-matic 4L60E transmissions. Depending on application, these transmissions may include calibration or hardware
changes over the standard transmission.
These transmissions are all developments of the standard Holden Hydra-matic 4L60-E transmission. As in all HSV
developments, reliability and efficiency have been improved as a result of engineering research, development and
extensive testing. In most cases, development of the standard transmissions has been necessitated by - and carried out
in parallel with - the development of HSV’s enhanced range of engines. The result is that all HSV VY models have an
engine-transmission combination designed to satisfy (and to exceed) the operating specification of the vehicle. The types
of automatic transmissions used in the HSV VY and series of vehicles listed in Table F-1, are explained in succeeding
paragraphs.

5.2 HSV VY Clubsport 260, Senator 260
Sedan and Signature 260 Sedan
The Automatic Transmission available for Clubsport, Senator and Grange 260 Models, is the model HAD. The HAD
transmission is the standard Holden VY V8 transmission. Service operations are the same as those described in the
Holden VY series Service Information, refer to Section 7C1 – Hydra-Matic 4L60-E Automatic Transmission – General
Information.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) HSV transmissions fitted to 260 kW vehicles incorporate a specific PCM. This HSV
PCM is calibrated to recognise the higher torque of the engine, and to provide a specific shift pattern for optimum control
of the vehicle. Section E of this Supplement provides the id entification and service numbers of the PCM required for
these transmissions.
For VY HSV have taken the opportunity to include two very different transmission modes using the Power/Economy
switch. The economy mode shift pattern has been optimised for smooth driving while the Power mode gives firmer shifts
and takes advantage of the LS1 engines characteristics.
