2 Automatic Transmission
2.1 General Description
The automatic transmission fitted to the HSV WK model is a variant of the Hydra-matic 4L65E transmission. Depending
on application, this transmission may include calibration or hardware changes over the standard transmission.
These transmissions are all developments of the standard Holden Hydra-matic 4L65-E transmission. As in all HSV
developments, reliability and efficiency have been improved as a result of engineering research, development and
extensive testing. In most cases, development of the standard transmissions has been necessitated by - and carried out
in parallel with - the development of HSV’s enhanced range of engines. The result is that all HSV WK models have an
engine-transmission combination designed to satisfy (and to exceed) the operating specification of the vehicle.
HSV WK Grange 285 Sedan
The Automatic Transmission available for the Grange 285 Model, is the model HZD. The HZD transmission has a higher
torque capability than the standard “HAD” transmission found in the Holden VY2 series.
Powertrain Control Module ( PCM)
HSV transmissions fitted to 285 kW vehicles incorporates a specific PCM. This HSV PCM is calibrated to recognise the
higher torque of the engine, and to provide a specific shift pattern for optimum control of the vehicle. Section E of this
Supplement provides the identification and service numbers of the PCM required for these transmissions.
For WK HSV have taken the opportunity to include two very different transmission modes using the Power/Economy
switch. The economy mode shift pattern has been optimised for smooth driving while the Power mode gives firmer shifts
and takes advantage of the LS1 engines characteristics.
