1 General Information
With the following exceptions, MY 2004 AWD Wagon Lubrication and Service information carries over from the MY 2004
VY and V2 Series Information.
These exceptions are detailed as follows:
Increased engine oil capacity and relocation of the engine oil filter to the front of the oil pan.
Transfer case inspection, lubrication and service requirements.
Front and rear final drive inspection, lubrication and service requirements.
Sunroof drainage inspection.
Changes to the maintenance schedule reflect the above requirements and are as follows:
Abnormal Operating Conditions: Final drive oil change – includes front and rear final drive assemblies at 20 000 km
intervals.
Final drive oil level checks – includes front and rear final drive assemblies.
Final drive check for leaks – includes front and rear final drive assemblies.
Final drive oil change – includes front and rear final drive assemblies – 160 000 km.
Automatic Level Ride Suspension (if fitted) compressor air filter.
Transfer case checks – includes check for leaks of transfer case oil, breather hose condition and routing.
Transfer case oil change –160 000 km.
Rear sunroof drain grommets – check for blockage
For all other Lubrication and Service information, refer to Section 0B Lubrication and Service in the MY 2004 VY and
V2 Series Service Information.

2 Lubrication and Service
2.1 Engine
Lubrication
Engine oil capacity has been increased to 8.0 litres approximately (including filter). The engine oil filter is the same as
that fitted to previous GEN III V8 models, but has been relocated to the front of the oil pan. For all other information
relating engine lubrication, refer to Section 6A3 Engine Mechanical – GEN III V8 Engine.

2.2 Transfer Case
Inspection
A check for lubricant leaks should be made at each maintenance service. If there is evidence of leakage, the condition
must be corrected. Refer to Section 7F Transfer Case for further information.
Lubrication
The transfer case requires a fluid change at 160 000 km. It is vital that only the recommended lubricant be used.
The only lubricant approved for use in this transfer case is Esso MTF-LT-1. Refer to Section 7F, 2.2 Draining / Filling
Transfer Case Lubricant.
Transfer Case Breather
The breather hose (1) should also be inspected at each
maintenance service, to ensure that the hose is routed
correctly and is in good condition.
A check should also be made to ensure that the open end is
not blocked. This can be achieved by disconnecting the
hose from the breather pipe at the transfer case.
Wear eye protection when clearing a blocked
hose.
Then, either manually blow through the hose or use
compressed air. Reinstall the hose to the transfer case pipe.

2.3 Front Final Drive
Inspection
A check for lubricant leaks should be made at each maintenance service. If there is evidence of leakage, the condition
must be corrected. Refer to Section 4B2 Front Final Drive, Bearing Housing and Driveshafts for further information.
Lubrication
A 24 mm hexagon headed, plastic filler plug (1) is fitted to
the front of the front final drive housing. It is located towards
the front of the final drive housing on the left-hand side. The
lubricant level is to be maintained within 5 mm of the bottom
edge of the filler plug hole, when COLD and the vehicle is
on level ground. Use only the recommended lubricant.
For all information relating to checking of the front final drive
lubricant level, refer to Section 4B2, 2.1 Checking Final
Drive Lubricant Level.
Figure 0B – 2
An 8 mm Allen key headed plug (1) is provided to facilitate
draining of lubricant from the front final drive. It is located on
left-hand side final of the final drive housing, adjacent to the
lower front mounting bolt.
For all information relating to changing of lubricant and
flushing of the front final drive unit, refer to Section 4B2,
2.2 Changing / Flushing Final Drive Lubricant.

Final Drive Assembl y Breather
The breather hose and pipe assembly (1) should be
checked regularly to ensure that it is correctly routed, the
hose condition is sound, the end is not blocked and the pipe
bracket fastener (2) is secure.
