SECTION 6D1-3 - IGNITION SYSTEM - V6 ENGINE &
V6 SUPERCHARGED ENGINE
CAUTION:
This vehicle will be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). A SRS will consist of either
seat belt pre-tensioners and a driver's air bag, seat belt pre-tensioners and a driver's and front
passenger's air bag s or seat belt pre- tensio ners, d riv er’s and fron t p asseng er’s air bag and lef t and rig ht
hand side air bags. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, Section 12M Supplemental Restraint System of
this Service Information CD before performing any service operation on, or around any SRS
components, the steering mechanism or wiring. Failure to follow the SAFETY PRECAUTIONS could
result in SRS deployment, resulting in possible personal injury or unnecessary SRS system repairs.
CAUTION:
This vehicle may be equipped with LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas). In the interests of safety, the LPG
fuel system should be isolated by turning 'OFF' the manual service valve and then draining the LPG
service lines, before any service work is carried out on the vehicle. Refer to the LPG leaflet included with
the Owner's Handbook for details or the appropriate Section of this Service Information CD for more
specific servicing information.
1. GENERAL INFORMATION
The ignition system on VT Series II Models with V6 and V6 Superc harged engines rem ains unchanged as detailed
in Section 6D1-3 IGNITION SYSTEM of the VT Series I Service Information, noting the following:
SPARK PLUGS
At or about the start of VT Series II production, the spark plug type for a V6 Supercharged engine will change from
a platinum tipped AC spark plug (AC 41-919) to a standard NGK spark plug (BPR6EF-13).
Standard type spark plugs will service back, and the platinum tipped spark plugs will service forward, however,
spark plug types should not be mixed; always replace spark plugs as a set.
The service replacement intervals for spark plug replacement remains at 40,000 km regardless of the spark plug
type.
SPARK PLUG LEADS
A changed manufacturer and type of spark plug lead was introduced as a running change. Breakpoint details are:
Engine Engine No. Production Build Date and
Serial No.
V6 N/A VH870130 April 21, 1999 – L450321
V6 S/C VS876563 May 20, 1999 – L460549
The new leads can be recognised by the colour change f rom grey to black and the word “Electric fil’ printed in white
along the lead and the fact that have a 90° spark plug lead connection, instead of the previous straight connection.
The new leads will only service Series II V6 engines.
Resistance values change with the introduction of these leads and reference to the following, reflects that change:
‘ELECTRICFIL’ SPARK PLUG LEAD RESISTANCE
V6 NA Engine 1,700 Ohm per 30 cm length approx.
V6 Supercharged Engine 475 Ohm per 30 cm approx.
Service Precaution:
When installing the new leads, only handle the boot and ‘feel’ for centr ing of the lead c onnection with the s par k plug
term inal or coil pos t. Once aligned, pus h the lead boot until the lead connection is f ully engaged with the s park plug
terminal and/or coil post. This installation approach is required to avoid a potential misfire condition that may
otherwise occur with incompletely installed leads.
NOTE: A higher than normal effort is required to fully seat the new boots to the spark plug and coil post.
