Removal and Installation
1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold, three-way catalytic conver ter (TWC), exhaust pipes, a
muffler, seals and gaskets.
The three-way catalytic converter is an emission control device added to the exhaust system to reduce the
levels o f Hydrocarbon (HC), Carbon M onoxide (CO), and Oxides o f Nitrogen (NOx) pol lutants in the exhaust
gas.
2. MAINTENANCE
WARNING:
To avoid the danger of being burned, do not touch
the exhaust system when the system is hot. Any ser-
vice on the exhaust system should be performed
when t he system is cool.
At every interval of periodic maintenance service, and
when vehicle is raised for other service , check exhaust sys-
tem as foll ows:
Inspect the rubber mountings f or damage, deterioration
and out of position.
Check the exhaust system for leakage, loose connec-
tion, dents and damage.
If the b olts or nuts are l oosened, t ighten them t o s peci-
fied torque.
Refer to 3, ON-VEHICLE SERVICE in this Section.
Check nearby body areas for damaged, missing, or
mispositioned parts, open seams or body holes and
any other defect which could permit exhaust fumes to
enter into vehicle.
Make sure that the exhaust system components have
enough clearance from the underbody to avoid over-
heating and possible damage to the passenger com-
part men t car pet .
Any defect should be fixed at once.
3. ON-VEHICLE SERVICE
Legend
WARNING:
To avoid the danger of being burned, do not touch any part of the exhaust system when the sys-
tem is hot. Any service on the exhaust system should be performed when the system is cool.
3.1 EXHAUST MANIFOLD
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Refer to Section 6A1, 3.6 EXHAUST MANIFOLD for service procedures of the exhaust manifold.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
WARNING:
To avoid the danger of being burned, do not touch the exhaust system when the system is hot.
Any service on the exhaust system should be performed when the system is cool.
CAUTION:
The exhaust pipe is fitted with a three-way catalytic converter which should not be exposed to
any shock. Take care no t to drop or hit it.
For replacement of the exhau st pipe, hoist the vehicle and observe the following:
Tighten the bolts and nuts to the specified torque when reassembli ng.
Following installation, star t the engine and inspect each exhaust system joint for leakage.
