SECTION F - TRANSMISSION
CAUTION:
HSV vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). An SRS consists of seat belt
pre-tensioners (fitted to all front seats), and a driver’s-side air bag or a driver’s-side air bag AND a
passenger’s-sid e air bag. Refer t o CAUT IONS, Section 12M , of the Holden VS Series Service Info rmation
or Section 12M, of the VT Series II Service Information before performing any service operation on or
around SRS components, the steering mechanism or wiring. Failure to follow the CAUTIONS could
result in personal injury or unnecessary SRS system repairs.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this bulletin is to provide inform ation on the tr ansmiss ion as semblies f itted to the HSV VT 2 and HSV
VS models. This inform ation is designed to supplement the information contained in the Holden VT and VS Series
Service Inform ation, and details are given where differences occur between the HSV models and standard Holden
models. A series of instruction drawings describe the design changes and indicate specific part numbers, fitting
instructions and relevant notes for vehicle servicing.
NOTE: If specific technical data on a HSV model is not contained in this supplement, obtain data for that model
from the relevant VT or VS Series Manual or Automatic Transmission Service Information. References are made
throughout this section to Holden Service Information, to assist in providing information for specific service
operations.
CAUTION: When hoisting (or jacking) HSV models, ensure that the lifting head of the hoist lifts on the chassis
before the arm of the hoist contacts the side-skirt
1. TRANSMISSION - GENERAL INFORMATION
A range of manual and automatic transmissions are fitted to the HSV VT2 and HSV VS models. This range includes
the standard Holden options of four-speed automatic, five-speed manual (VS III Maloo only) and six speed manual.
HSV models fitted with standard Holden transmissions are to be serviced in accordance with the relevant Holden
Service Information, clutch mechanisms associated with these vehicles are also addressed in the Holden
publications.
The following table provides a summary of Standard (S) and Optional (O) transmissions fitted to HSV VT1, VT 2
and VS models.

HSV vehicles fitted with the standard Holden manual transmission (see Table F-1), are also fitted with a standard
Holden clutch. These clutch assemblies are to be serviced in accordance with the procedures contained in the
relevant Holden Service Information.

3.1. SERVICE OPERATIONS
Service operations for both m anual transm issions available on HSV vehicles are detailed in Sect ion 7B2 - Man ual
Transmission - V8 Engine of the VT Series I Service Inf ormation or Section 7B3 - Manual Transmission - GEN
III V8 Engine of the VT Series II Service Information.

4. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
4.1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The autom atic transmissions fitted to HSV VT2 m odels are the standard Holden transmissions, which are variants
of the Hydra-matic 4L60-E trans m issions. Depending on applic ation, these trans m issions m ay include calibration or
hardware changes over the standard transmission.
Thes e transm issions are all developm ents of the standard Holden Hydra-m atic 4L60-E transm ission. As in all HSV
developments, reliability and efficiency have been improved as a result of engineering research, development and
extensive testing. In most cases, development of the standard transmissions has been necessitated by - and
carried out in parallel with - the development of HSV’s enhanced range of engines. The result is that all HSV VT,
VT2 and HSV VS models have an engine-transmission combination designed to satisfy (and to exceed) the
operating specification of the vehicle. The types of automatic transmissions used in the HSV VT2 and HSV VS
series of vehicles listed in Table F-1, are explained in succeeding paragraphs. Shift Patterns for each HSV
transmission have been included in this section (see Figure F-6 and Figure F-7) to assist with the diagnosis and
servicing of these transmissions.
4.2. HSV VT 2 CLUBSPORT 250, SENATOR 250 SEDAN AND ESTATE, AND
GRANGE 250 SEDAN.
The Automatic Transmission available for Clubsport, Senator and Grange 250 Models, is the model 9HPD. The
9HPD transmission is the standard Holden VT2 V8 transmission. Service operations are the same as those
described in Section 7C1 - Automatic Transmission of the VT Series II Service Information.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) HSV transmissions fitted to 250 kW vehicles incorporate a specific PCM. This
HSV PCM is calibrated to recognise the higher torque of the engine, and to provide a specific shift pattern for
optimum c ontrol of the vehicle. Sect ion E of this Supplem ent provides the identific ation and service number s of the
PCM required for these transmissions.
For VT2 HSV have taken the opportunity to include two very different transmission modes using the
Power/Economy switch. The economy mode shift pattern has been optimised for smooth driving while the Power
mode gives firmer shifts and takes advantage of the LS1 engines characteristics.
4.3 HSV XU6, SENATOR AND GRANGE 180 S/C
The HSV VT Supercharged V6 range are available with automatic transmissions only.
The automatic transmissions fitted to HSV VT Supercharged V6 models is the standard Holden VT Hydra-matic
model 8HND. Service operations for this transmission are detailed in Section 7C1 – Automatic Transmission of
the VT Series II Service Information.
4.4. HSV AND VS III GRANGE 195i, XU8 195i AND MALOO 195i
The Automatic Trans mission f itted to all G r ange 195i vehicles is the model 8HJD: this tr ansmiss ion is als o available
as an optional fit to the Maloo 195i Utility . This transmission is based on the Holden VT series .transmission and
service oper ations ar e the s ame as thos e des cr ibed in the Holden VT Series Ser vice Inf or mation. However, s pec if ic
HSV com ponents have been inc orpor ated in the trans miss ion during manuf actur e and thes e components MUST be
replaced with genuine HSV components when specified.
Service Parts. Specific HSV parts available for the servicing of the 195 kW transmissions are as follows:
