SECTION I – ELECTRICAL AND INSTRUMENTS

CAUTION:

HSV vehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). An SRS consists of seat belt

pre-tensioners (fitted to all front seats), and a driver’s side air bag or a driver’s side airbag AND a

passenger’s-side air bag and left and right hand side air bags. Refer to CAUTIONS, Section 12M , of the

Holden VS Series Service Information or Section 12M, of the VT Series II Service Information before

performing any service operation on or around SRS components, the steering mechanism or wiring.

Failure to follow the CAUTIONS could result in personal injury or unnecessary SRS syste m repairs.

PURPOSE

The purpos e of th is s upplem ent is to pro vide inform ation on the HSV electr ica l and ins trum ent acces sories f itted t o

the HSV VT Series II, VS & WH models. The information is designed to supplement that given in the Holden VT

Series II and VS Series Service Information and details are given where differences occur between the HSV

models, and standard Holden models. A series of instruction drawings describe the design changes and indicate

specific part numbers, fitting instructions and relevant notes for vehicle servicing.

References are made throughout this section to Holden Service Information, to assist in providing information for

specific service operations.

CAUTION: When hoisting (or jacking) HSV models, ensure that the lifting head of the hoist lifts on the chassis

before the arm of the hoist contacts the side-skirt

INSTRUMENTATION

1. GENER AL: A special Instrument Clust er designed by HSV is f itted to all HSV VT 2, VS & W H vehicles, except

VT1 XU8. The cluster includes a HSV speedometer with an operating range extending to 250 km/h. The cluster

incorporates a mid-grey face, red needles and warning lights and, when illuminated, green numerals and letters.

HSV GTS is fitted with an upshift indicator . This indicator is contr olled b y the Eng ine Control Unit and t he LED an d

buzzer giving the driver an indication when to upshift to achieve maximum performance. The shift indicator will

operate:

• When engine coolant is <85°C at 4,000 RPM.

• When engine coolant is >85°C:

− 1

st 6,050 RPM

− 2

nd 6,200 RPM

− 3

rd 6,300 RPM

− 4

th 6,300 RPM

− 5

th 6,300 RPM

The harness has an inline fuse (3A) which is located underneath the glove compartment near the firewall. The

power feed for the indicator is fused by F12, turn signal (15A). Ref. Figure I-1.

2. As a running change through VT2 models the tachometer redline has been changed to suit particular engine

specifications - refer table below.

3. SERVICE OPERATIONS: The HSV instrument cluster and the standard Holden VT2 cluster use the same

mounting fixtures and fasteners. Remove, service and refit the HSV instrument cluster in accordance with the

procedures detailed in Section 12C - Instruments, Wipers/Washers & Horn of the VT Series II Service

Information.

ELECTRICAL FACILITIES

The various special HSV options fitted to the VT2, VS & WH range of vehicles, often require that special or

additional electric harnesses be installed. Some of these HSV harnesses are fitted during vehicle build-up at the

Holden factory and other smaller harnesses (often called ‘a patch harness’) are fitted at the HSV facility when the

electrical option is being installed. A summary of these electrical harnesses is included to facilitate service, repair

and retro-fitment of the HSV options.
