SECTION 6B3 - ENGINE COOLING -
GEN III V8 ENGINE
IMPORTANT
Before performing any Service Operation or other procedure described in this Section, refer to Section
00 CAUTIONS AND NOTES for correct workshop practices with regard to safety and/or property damage.
1. GENERAL I NFORMATI O N
Apart fr om a m inor change to the engine vapour vent s ystem and a c hange in the c oolant pump, the cooling sys tem
for VX Series Models equipped with the GEN III V8 engine rem ains unchanged f rom VT Series II Models , and is as
detailed in Section 6B3 ENGINE COOLING – GEN III V8 ENGINE of the VT Series II Service Information, noting
the following:
1. A minor change to the cooling fan wiring has been implemented, involving a single sealed connector. This
change however, does not affect the operation of the cooling fans. For additional information, refer to
Section 12N FUSES, RELAYS & WIRING HARNESSES and Section 12P WIRING DIAGRAMS in the VT II
Series, Service Information.
2. With the introduction of the MY2001 GEN III V8 engine to VX Series vehicles, the change in intake manifold
(refer Section 6A3 ENGINE MECHANICAL – GEN III V8 ENGINE in the VX Service Information), has meant
that a revision to the engine vapour venting was necessary.
Any vapour that develops in the engine (or air
when the cooling system is being filled), is
routed back to the coolant surge tank, through
a vapour vent pipe (1), fastened to the front of
the cylinder heads in two places, by double
ended studs (2). The rear locations are now
blocked by two vapour vent covers (3). The
gaskets (4) used in all four locations remains
unchanged.
As previously detailed, vapour then flows via
hoses, through the throttle body, to the left
hand radiator surge tank. Another vent hose
then connects the left hand radiator side tank
with the coolant surge tank, thereby directing
vapour to that point.
Testing has shown that the vapour venting
efficiency remains unchanged from the
previous system.

3. A change in supplier has resulted in the engine
drive belt pulley now being permanently
attached to the coolant pump hub. Other
changes include dif ferent length attaching bolts
(2) and unique carrier gaskets (3). Refer to
Section 6A3 ENGINE MECHANICAL – GEN
III V8 ENGINE in the VX Service Information
for further detail.
The new coolant pump will service back to
earlier build engines, provided the bolts and
gaskets are also fitted.
NOTE: The later design gaskets are NOT to be
used with the earlier design coolant pump, nor are
the earlier gaskets to be used with the later pump.
